“As a recordist I am acutely aware of my presence being an imposition and I try incredibly hard to lessen that impact.”

The three tracks that comprise “Gate” were created over the last few years as part of an ongoing exercise in Gibbs creative practice. These compositions are built from field recordings that explore the interdependent relationship between natural and built spaces. Gibbs is inspired by the liminal spaces where cities and nature overlap. These pieces include the sounds of humans moving through built environments - filtered and captured through the resonances on and within various structures.

Source material for this work includes recordings made across Maine, New Hampshire, New Orleans, and Barcelona. Recordings were made with a variety of microphones, including omni-directional and contact microphones, and edited no-input mixing techniques.

“When recording in a natural setting I set my equipment up as quickly and quietly as I can and do my best to camouflage the rig. Once my levels are set I usually walk away from the area, letting it recover from my presence.”

E Jason Gibbs is a guitar player and field recordist.

His compositions are built from field recordings, and explore the relationship between the built and natural worlds and how humans impose themselves on environments.
